More often than not, when we have a sprain or a strain, the first question that comes to our mind is “when should we ice it and when should we use a heat pack?”. Here is a simple guide:

Ice
A new injury within 48 hours
Pain relief to a muscle
Swelling

Heat (Promotes better blood circulation especially couple it with massage)
An injury after 48 hours
Stiffness or soreness on the muscle or joint
Muscle spasm (sudden involuntary contraction of a muscle that is painful)
Arthritis (inflammation of a joint)
Tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon)

Note:
1. A sprain is an injury to the ligaments meanwhile a strain is an injury to muscles or tendons.
2. Ligament is a tissues that connects two bones together meanwhile tendon is a tissue that connect a muscle to bone.
