Can’t help but to compare Healthland with Thai Odyssey; with HealthLand catering more to the masses. With their happy hour promotion, it is indeed very worth it with great massage as well. The therapist even have timer to ensure that you really get the 2 hours happy hour rate that you paid for.
But during happy hour, as soon as you step in (except the Renaissance Hotel branch), it is really hectic and to a certain extent, chaotic. They really have high demand but the downside is the ambience does suffer. If you go there on your off day wanting to relax, you won’t be able to achieve that at least until you are on your massage bed.
At times, the therapist definitely went on back to back service because they do look tired and it shows on their face. They are definitely lacking the smile and cheerfulness. Fortunately, in term of the massage quality, it does not suffer. And I can say is their skill and technique is pretty consistent from therapist to therapist. And quite honestly, massage quality wise, there is a lot of similarity with Thai Odyssey or those premium brands that offer Thai massage modality. And they are all Thais too and could have even graduated from the same massage school for all I know. 🙂
At the beginning of the session, they will always start with a foot bath which I always enjoy. Then at the end of the session, they do serve you tea and bring your shoe as well.
When it comes to the main massage session, it starts with compression and thumb presses over a towel. Sometimes, they use knee on the thigh and gluts area too. Then with oil, there is a lot of forearm glide and palm strokes, working from the leg to the back on prone; while on supine, from the leg to hand, neck and face/head. Most times, the therapist do ask whether you would like to have the stomach massage. And for chest, it also varies from therapist to therapist. The massage session will end on seated position with stretches and I am always fearful when the twist my back….just not my cup of tea.
Update (Jan 2019): Went to their recently opened Sungai Chua outlet with my partner. The ambience as per their other outlet is equally great and currently they are running opening promotion of happy hour throughout the day. In terms of the therapist, her structure of doing the massage is slightly different than what I have experienced at their other outlet. However, despite being different, it is not bad and no negative comment. It is still a great massage. And we manage to get the couple room too. It can’t be booked prior and on first come first serve basis.
Update (May 2022): In term of skill, the therapist still has the quality and standard. My two qualms are whether do the therapist still need to wear glove to do the massage as that definitely feels off for me with the coarse feeling. Plus, there is also additional PPE surcharge on top of SST that is charged back to the customer.
Update (July 2022): Looks like the glove and PPE surcharge has gone.
Notes:
-You can’t bring own oil, it is not a hard no but they don’t prefer it.
– There is disposable underwear provided. You are separated merely by curtains but you don’t feel vulnerable because each compartment has ample space and the lighting makes it feel cozy.
-Most times, you have the option to choose either male or female therapist and they can do for both sexes
-Most of their outlet has multiple stories and they do have the capacity to cater to huge volume of demand. And also if you are lucky, can get the couple room which give even better privacy.
Pros:
-Great price especially happy hour rate that comes with quality massage
Cons:
-The general customer service from the therapist can be improved (language is definitely a barrier as most of them can’t speak English)
-Stepping into the outlet during peak hours can be off putting.
